Build a repeatable camera and driving route to catch late LOD swaps, disappearing parts and over-detailed distant vehicles.

Vehicle LOD problems are easiest to miss when testing consists of spawning a car and walking around it. Players see vehicles from moving cameras, across intersections, in mirrors and in crowded parking areas. A model can look correct at two metres yet hold expensive detail far into the distance, swap too late, lose wheels or lights during a transition, or vanish before nearby scenery does. A fixed route turns those visual impressions into evidence you can reproduce.

Create three observation distances

Pick an open staging location with a long sightline and stable lighting. Mark near, medium and far observation points using map coordinates or fixed environmental landmarks. Keep the same vehicle position and heading for each pass. The exact distances should reflect your server’s normal scenes: a mechanic bay needs close scrutiny, a car meet needs medium-range density, and highway traffic needs stable distant silhouettes.

  • Near: inspect badges, dashboard, lights, wheels and visible interior parts.
  • Medium: watch the full silhouette and the first obvious geometry change.
  • Far: verify the vehicle remains readable without preserving close-up detail.
  • Moving pass: drive toward and away from the parked test vehicle at a fixed speed.

Test the transition, not just each model

Stand at the far marker, move steadily toward the vehicle and record the pass. Repeat while moving away. Look for popping that changes the silhouette, gaps that expose the cabin, wheel swaps, floating extras, missing glass and lighting that changes independently from the body. A lower-detail model does not need to reproduce every seam. It must preserve the shape and gameplay-critical parts without calling attention to the transition.

A good LOD is not the prettiest distant model. It is the cheapest model that keeps the vehicle recognizable and stable.

Repeat the pass with common extras enabled and disabled. Police lighting, spoilers, tuning parts, roof equipment and liveries can behave differently from the base body. Test doors and the bonnet in their open state where gameplay uses them. If an extra survives after its parent detail level changes, or disappears too early, capture the exact configuration rather than reporting a generic visual bug.

Add density after the single-vehicle pass

A single model reveals transition defects; a lineup reveals cost and readability. Spawn a controlled set of the same vehicle, then a mixed fleet representative of production. Keep counts recorded. Drive the same route while watching frame pacing and visible swaps. Do not jump immediately to an unrealistic wall of cars. Start with the number your events, dealership or police scene can genuinely create.

  1. Run one vehicle to isolate model behavior.
  1. Run a realistic lineup to expose repeated cost.
  1. Test mixed liveries and extras used by players.
  1. Repeat at night because emissive materials and lights can alter the result.

Decide with acceptance criteria

Write pass or fail conditions before requesting a repair. Examples include: no missing wheels at any marked point, no open body gaps during transition, no full-resolution interior detail at the far marker, and no disappearing emergency-light assembly while the vehicle remains clearly visible. Avoid vague tickets such as “optimize the car.” A modeler can act on a recorded angle, distance, state and component.

Keep the camera itself consistent. Third-person distance, field of view, vehicle speed and camera rotation can change when a transition becomes noticeable. Use one driver and one observer where possible: the driver follows the marked route, while the observer records the vehicle state and timestamp. For dealership displays, add a slow orbit because players study parked cars differently from traffic. For emergency fleets, repeat with the lighting system active and inactive. Archive the clips beside the asset version, not in a temporary chat thread. A future model update can then be checked against the same visual standard instead of relying on memory.

After changes, repeat the original route without moving the markers. Compare the same approach, retreat and density passes.
